Are you an adventure enthusiast who loves overlanding, exploring the great outdoors, and camping in remote locations? If so, you're probably familiar with the joy of sitting around a warm, crackling fire under the starry sky. One essential tool for creating a cozy campfire while overlanding is a portable fire pit. But, before you start roasting marshmallows and sharing stories with your fellow travelers, it's crucial to understand how to use fire pits safely to protect the environment and ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone. In this article, we'll provide you with a comprehensive guide on using fire pits while overlanding.

Choose the Right Fire Pit

When it comes to selecting a fire pit for your overlanding adventures, there are several options to consider. Portable fire pits, also known as campfire rings or fire pans, are designed specifically for camping and can be easily carried in your vehicle. Look for fire pits that are made from durable materials like Corten steel or cast iron, and are lightweight and compact for easy transport. Opt for fire pits that have proper ventilation and allow for efficient airflow to ensure a clean and efficient burn. Additionally, check local regulations and fire restrictions in the areas where you plan to camp to make sure the type of fire pit you choose is allowed.

Select the Right Location

Choosing the right location for your fire pit is crucial to protect the environment and prevent wildfires. Always follow Leave No Trace principles and avoid setting up your fire pit in sensitive areas such as dry grasslands, close to vegetation, or on rocky surfaces that may scorch or crack. Look for designated fire rings that are already established at your campsite. If none are available, select a location that is at least 15 feet away from tents, trees, and other flammable materials. Avoid digging holes for your fire pit, as this can damage the landscape and disturb wildlife habitats.

Prepare the Fire Pit

Before you start your fire, it's important to prepare your fire pit properly. Clear away any flammable debris such as leaves, sticks, and pine needles from the area surrounding the fire pit. Make sure the fire pit is on a stable, level surface, and line the bottom with rocks or a fire mat to protect the ground. Follow any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer of your fire pit, and always use the appropriate tools, such as fire gloves and a fire poker, when handling the fire or adding wood to the fire pit.

Build and Maintain a Safe Fire

When building your fire, use small sticks, twigs, and firestarter to get the fire going. Avoid using accelerants such as gasoline or lighter fluid, as they can be dangerous and harmful to the environment. Once the fire is burning, gradually add larger sticks and logs, and keep the fire at a manageable size. Never leave your fire unattended, and always keep a bucket of water, a fire extinguisher, or a shovel nearby in case of emergencies. Avoid burning trash or leaving food scraps in the fire pit, as this can attract wildlife and create pollution. When you're ready to extinguish the fire, use water to douse the flames completely, stir the ashes, and pour water over them until they are cool to the touch.

Leave No Trace

As responsible overlanders, it's crucial to practice Leave No Trace principles when using fire pits. This means packing out all trash, leftover food, and litter, and leaving your campsite as you found it. Dispose of ashes and cold charcoal in designated receptacles, if available, or pack them out in a sealed container. Avoid burying ashes or charcoal, as they can smolder and cause wildfires.
